A woman has suffered life-threatening injuries after a crash on the M5, police say.

The crash happened on the southbound stretch of the motorway between junction 24 for Bridgwater and junction 25 for Taunton at about 02:15 BST. Avon and Somerset Police said a blue BMW was the only vehicle involved.

The injured woman remains in hospital and her next of kin have been informed of her condition, police said. The force asked anyone with information or dashcam footage which they felt could assist with enquiries to get in touch.

The M5 was initially closed in both directions and has since reopened.
