CCTV installed to tackle illegal school parking
Getty ImagesCCTV cameras have been installed at four primary schools in Hull to improve road safety and deter illegal parking.
The cameras have been put up outside of St. Richard's Voluntary Catholic Academy, Victoria Dock Primary School, Wold Academy and Francis Askew Primary School.
A warning period is in place until 13 February, during which anyone breaking the rules will receive a formal notice by post. After that, £70 fines will be issued.
Councillor Mark Ieronimo said: "This is an important measure in creating a safer school environment for children."
The installation of the cameras followed a trial at Parkstone Primary School which saw a 72% reduction in vehicles breaching parking restrictions.
Hull City Council said it hoped the CCTV would improve the safety for children and pedestrians before and after the school day.
Parking on School Keep Clear or zig-zag markings is illegal, the council warned. Yellow lines also indicate that parking restrictions apply.
Ieronimo has urged motorists to park safely, legally and considerately, and to avoid blocking household driveways near schools.
Fines will be reduced to £35 if paid promptly, the council added.
The authority also said civil enforcement officers would continue in-person monitoring at schools that do not have CCTV parking enforcement.
