Bake Off winner awarded honorary degree

A previous Great British Bake Off winner has admitted she felt "shocked" to be presented with an honorary degree by the University of Worcester.

Nadiya Hussain MBE won the popular TV competition in 2015 and has since gone on to become a television chef, author and presenter.

A university spokesperson said: "Since rising to fame, Nadiya has used her platform to inspire others through her openness about mental health, her creative achievements, and her personal story of resilience."

Reacting to the honour, Hussain said: "To be recognised for the work I do is a huge honour, especially because I don't do it for recognition."

Lindsey Hilsum, the international editor for Channel 4 News, has also been selected to receive an honorary degree.

She is known for reporting from global conflict zones including Rwanda, Iraq, Syria, and Ukraine.

A university spokesperson said: "Born in Worcestershire, her reporting has consistently brought critical global issues to public attention with depth and humility."

Hussain and Hilsum are to be among hundreds of graduates receiving their degrees in subjects spanning healthcare, education, business, sports, science, arts, and humanities.

Ceremonies are set to take place in Worcester Cathedral on between 9 and 11 September.
