Plans have been approved for two padel courts to be built at a golf club dating back to the late Victorian period.

Padel X has received planning permission to build the courts in a car park at Burghley Park Golf Club, near Stamford, Lincolnshire.

Its first planning application in February was withdrawn after Peterborough City Council planners said removing seven trees to build the courts was "unacceptable".

The company's fresh application avoided the loss of the established trees and landscape. The proposal was approved on 19 December the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

In a planning statement, Plan Padel on behalf of Padel X, said the sport was rapidly growing in popularity, and was an "ideal addition" to the golf club's amenities.

Padel is a racquet sport that uses enclosed courts about a third smaller than lawn tennis and, like squash, players can bounce the ball off the walls.

The approved development includes a landscape scheme, with woodland planting to the west, between the courts and the adjacent London Road.

The golf club, which dates back to 1890, is set within Burghley Estate's parkland on the grounds of Burghley House.
