Scrabble tournament hosts more than 60 games

A Scrabble tournament has returned to Berkshire with more than 60 games taking place.

The UK Scrabble Open main event is running from Saturday until Monday, consisting of 24 games. Other events will be running until 10 January.

About 100 players are taking part in the main event, all hoping to win the £1,000 top prize. This is £400 more than last year's event .

The competition at The Holiday Inn Reading South was opened by the Deputy Mayor of Reading, Paul Gittings.

There will also be a live streaming of one game from each round on the Association of British Scrabble Players YouTube channel.

Some games will be accompanied by commentary and analysis from guest pundits.

James Burley, tournament organiser and director of the event, said: "The scale of this event is a huge positive step for our community, not just in terms of the number of players but also worldwide through the streaming channel."

"We have even had families come to spectate.

"To see young children taking such an interest is incredibly heartening, and can only strengthen the future of the game at tournament level."
