Size at which king scallops can be caught to rise

Plans are being made in Jersey to raise the minimum size at which king scallops can be caught.

The environment minister has proposed to increase the minimum size from 102mm to 105mm.

This would help help more scallops reproduce and protect future supplies for fisherman, a government report says.

It added future action would involve the department and or the ministerial office updating relevant parties of the decision and new laws would be written up.

The report said both commercial and recreational fishers were asked for their views and that they supported the change.

It added while increasing the minimum size might mean fewer shellfish would be harvested initially, it would ultimately lead to more sustainable and productive fisheries in the long run.

The amendment "also harmonises legislation in the Normano Breton Gulf between French and Jersey vessels, offering simplicity for enforcement and trade of this species", the report said.
