Wolverine the cat was missing for 10 months but has now been reunited with his owners

A cat who went missing almost a year ago has been reunited with his owners after being struck by five vehicles.

Leah Gregory and Paul Allsopp launched a search for their cat, Wolverine, 10 months ago when he went missing from their home in Cramlington.

But the couple admitted they "lost hope" they would ever see their furry friend again - until they received a call from the vet.

Gregory said they were over the moon to be reunited with Wolverine and his eyes "lit up" when they saw each other.

She said the couple had exhausted all leads in their search for Wolverine, until the vet rang them at 06:30 GMT on Monday to tell them he had been hit by a car.

"Then obviously we found out in the room that it was five vehicles and he had quite an extensive list of injuries," Gregory said.

"It was very 50-50 to what his outcome would be."

Wolverine is now making a good recovery and has been able to return home to his family, including his mum Skylar who the couple also own.

"He's started taking a few steps," said Gregory.

"That is incredible that he's doing that so soon because he's got fractures in his pelvis."

Although the couple admitted they lost hope during their search for Wolverine, Gregory said she still had a "twigging" feeling they would see him again.

"When we got that call, we both said to each other, even if he doesn't make it we would still be over the moon that we had answers and closure to what had happened," she said.

"We didn't think this outcome was going to happen.

"His eyes just lit up when we locked eyes with him and it was just surreal."
