The scheme will see 105 post-war prefab bungalows knocked down and replaced

Construction has started on the second phase of a scheme that will deliver more than 100 energy efficient council homes outside Wolverhampton.

The project will see post-war prefab bungalows demolished and replaced with 111 energy efficient council bungalows and four flats.

So far, as part of the initial phase, eight bungalows have already been finished and the first residents have moved in on the Lincoln Green Estate, in Bushbury. Work remains ongoing to build 36 more nearby.

The second phase, which has just started, is expected to deliver 63 new bungalows and four flats on the Lincoln Green Estate, and another 12 in Wood End, in Wednesfield.

"It is important we improve the quality of homes for our existing residents - and these new bungalows certainly deliver on that front, " said City of Wolverhampton Council deputy leader, councillor Steve Evans.

"The non-traditional built properties they were living in are in such poor structural condition that they can no longer be economically and satisfactorily maintained."

Demolition of the ageing bungalows has been taking place across the Lincoln Green Estate on Alleston Road, Alleston Walk, Grosvenor Road, Grosvenor Crescent, Lincoln Green, School Lane and Wood Lane, as well as in Wednesfield on Chestnut Grove, Hazel Grove and Cherry Grove.

Existing council tenants, currently living in the outdated bungalows, will be given the opportunity to move into the new properties, the local authority has said.

The remaining new homes will be allocated to local people in line with the council's housing allocations policy.
