Council considers quieter fireworks for displays
Getty ImagesHighland councillors have agreed that the local authority should look at using quieter fireworks at its 5 November displays.
Six Lib Dem councillors put forward a motion saying this would reduce the risk of causing distress to vulnerable people and also pets.
Their call won unanimous support at a full meeting of Highland Council on Thursday.
Low-level noise fireworks produce quieter whistles and pops than traditional ones.
Highland Council's largest Bonfire Night display is held in Inverness' Bught Park.
Inverness West councillor Alex Graham said: "Local residents have frequently expressed concern about noise from fireworks, including large organised displays which occasionally take place locally.
"We all want people to enjoy community events, which occasionally include fireworks displays."
He added: "This proposal aims to minimise any discomfort and harm to people, pets, wildlife and other livestock."
Five actions were agreed, including that the council investigates the use of "silent" fireworks.
Mr Graham said: "Pet owners in particular worry about the effect of loud fireworks noises and would welcome the silent fireworks.
"The visuals could still be an enthralling spectacle without the noise."
