Call for 'silent fireworks' at Highland Council displays

Low-level noise fireworks produce quieter whistles and pops.
Six Lib Dem councillors have put forward a motion, saying this would reduce the risk of causing distress to vulnerable people and also pets.
They have also asked that organisers of all other public events advertise them in advance, and for the council to promote greater awareness of the potential risks of fireworks.
Highland Council's largest Bonfire Night display is held in Inverness' Bught Park.
In their motion, the councillors said: "Fireworks are often used at different events during the year.
"While bringing much enjoyment to many people, they can also cause distress and anxiety to people, domestic pets, farm livestock, and wildlife.
"Animals may suffer injuries if they try to avoid the noise."
The councillors said local authority should "investigate the use of quieter or silent fireworks" at displays organised directly by the council, and encourage shops to stock low-level noise products.
Their call will be considered at a full meeting of Highland Council later this week.
