A suspected Islamic extremist will face trial in the summer for allegedly travelling from the UK to Somalia to fight.

Mohamed Farah Mohamoud, from Bristol, allegedly plotted terrorist acts and went to the African country for five weeks between 29 January and 4 March 2025.

The 21-year-old, of Francombe Grove, is accused of going to a "stronghold" occupied by extremists from so-called Islamic State.

On Friday, he appeared at the Old Bailey for a preliminary hearing. Justice Cheema-Grubb set a provisional trial date for 3 August at Winchester Crown Court.

He is charged with a single count of engaging in conduct in preparation for terrorist acts contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

A plea and case management hearing will take place either at the Old Bailey or in Winchester on 19 June.

Mohamoud, a Somali national, spoke only to confirm his identity and was remanded in custody.
