Man arrested after pedestrian killed in car crash

The crash happened in the Farringdon area of Sunderland, police said

A man has been arrested on suspicion of killing a pedestrian in a car crash.

A woman in her 50s was struck by a black Volvo XC90 as she was crossing Durham Road in Farringdon, Sunderland, at about 23:00 GMT on Saturday, Northumbria Police said.

She was pronounced dead at the scene near the junction with Arbroath Road, while the car drove away, police said.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and a car has been seized from the Pallion Park area of Sunderland.
