A vehicle smashed into the front of a shop in what the business described as a ram raid.

Northumbria Police said "significant damage" had been caused at the Jules B store on Osborne Road, in Jesmond, Newcastle, at 03:15 GMT.

When officers arrived, the vehicle had already left, the force said.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Jules B said that its team was "deeply saddened" and the store would be closed until further notice.

"In the early hours of this morning, the shop was severely damaged during a ram-raid, and it will take us some time to repair the premises and make it safe before we can reopen," it said.

No-one is reported to have been injured.
