Four shops on London Road in Marlborough were damaged in the crash

Several shops in a town have been damaged after a vehicle crashed into scaffolding, police say.

Wiltshire Police said officers believe a lorry was involved in the collision on London Road in Marlborough at 05:00 GMT on Sunday.

The scaffolding fell onto four independent shops and smashed their windows, with one owner describing the damage as "quite shocking".

The force said an investigation was under way and it was trying to identify the vehicle involved.

Plants were destroyed and the front window broken at florist Hedge Rose.

Owner Kate Howard said: "We closed on Monday to tidy everything up and assess if it was safe to open to customers.

"We've got boards up just now and have been thinking of getting posters printed to brighten them up."

Another shop, Marlborough Pets, said its front window and display were also damaged.

In a post on Facebook, the shop said: "It may look a little different outside, for now, while repairs are arranged, but we're happy to say we're open as usual."

Wiltshire Highways Service said the scaffolding was "dragged along the street" and its team has since made the area safe.
