Second screen plans for independent cinema

An independent cinema could be upgraded to include a second screen under new plans.

The Paramount cinema inside the historic Penistone Town Hall building is set to receive investment from Barnsley Council's £35m Principal Towns and Local Centres programme.

The fund has already been used for more than 60 projects including shop-front transformations, high street improvements and public art.

David Greenhough, chair of Penistone Area Council, said: "Upgrading the cinema facilities to add a second screen and the creation of a new café/bar area will make this special venue even more appealing."

The old town hall, which dates back to the 1910s, had its roof replaced last year after issues with leaks.

The council said the venue would have a second screen with 50 seats and wheelchair spaces.

It would mean two films could be shown at the same time, including blockbuster releases usually screened at multiplexes, and a more diverse programme of National Live Theatre productions and independent movies could be introduced.

If approved, the scheme also includes a new cafe/bar and a box office.

The public areas would also be redecorated "in keeping with the period features of the historic building".

The council has submitted its planning application for the cinema and Town Hall plans and if passed, work could begin next year, it said.

The wider investment programme has supported areas such as Wombwell, Mapplewell, Hoyland and Great Houghton.

Councillor Robin Franklin, for regeneration and culture, called the Paramount "a jewel in Penistone's crown" with "a great reputation".

He said: "These plans show our vision for making this historic venue even more welcoming to encourage Penistone residents and people from further afield to visit and enjoy it for themselves.

"They also demonstrate our commitment to investing in valued community facilities as part of our mission to enable everyone in Barnsley to enjoy memorable cultural experiences."
