Woman dies in crash involving van and HGV

A woman aged in her 30s has died in an early morning crash involving a van and an HGV.

The collision happened on the A66 near Bowes, County Durham, at about 08:00 BST on Tuesday.

Durham Police said the woman died despite the best efforts of the emergency services.

The force said the HGV driver was "unhurt but shaken". The woman's family are being supported by officers.

The major route was shut westbound with motorists are advised to find alternative routes.
