A bronze bell with "historical significance" has been stolen from a cemetery one week after being installed.

Peterlee Town Council moved the solid bronze bell from Shotton Hall to Peterlee Cemetery several days before it was stolen on the night of 13 February.

A council spokesperson said it was considered "to be of historical significance" and its removal was "being treated seriously".

Durham Police said an investigation has been launched and anyone with information should get in touch.
