The Trust said it had seen a "significant" rise in cold and flu cases

Mask-wearing is to become mandatory in maternity units in Coventry and Rugby after a rise in respiratory infections.

The trust which runs University Hospital in Coventry and the Hospital of St Cross, in Rugby said it has seen a "significant" rise in infections in the community and its hospitals.

Staff, patients and visitors to the maternity units will need to adhere to the rule.

A statement, posted on the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust social media channels, said the rule is to safeguard pregnant women, newborns and staff members.

"Due to a significant rise in respiratory infections in both the community and the hospital, face masks are now mandatory for all patients, staff and visitors within the maternity unit.

"Mask-wearing is essential to reduce the spread of infection and maintain a safe environment for all.

"We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in adhering to this policy and will regularly review the situation."
