Cowes Week: Island hosts thousands for regatta

The regatta began on Saturday and continues until Friday 8 August.
Cannon fire on The Parade in Cowes signals the start of racing.

Thousands of people have descended on the Isle of Wight for Cowes Week.

With up to 40 daily races for about 500 boats, it is billed as the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world.

The 5,000 competitors include Olympic and world-class professionals as well as weekend sailors.

As many as 60,000 people are expected throughout the week to watch the sailing and enjoy the land-based entertainment.
