Colm Marcus Boston, 37, from Heath in Cardiff, died four days after an incident in Pentyrch Street, Cathays, on 22 December.
A 29-year-old from Splott was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of assault and possession of an offensive weapon, South Wales Police said.
A 51-year-old man from the Mynachdy area, a 47-year-old man from Adamsdown, and a 60-year-old man from Cathays were previously arrested in connection with the incident and have been released on bail.
The 29-year-old man remains in custody and Boston's family have been updated, police said.
Boston's family said they and his friends were "devastated" by the loss of "a father, a son, a brother, a cousin, and a deeply loved friend to many across Cardiff and beyond".
"Colm lived a complex life, with its highs and lows, but he loved the people in his life fiercely and mattered greatly to so many," they said.
The family added they were "grateful for the compassion shown to us during this incredibly difficult time".
South Wales Police said officers were called to a report of an assault in Pentyrch Street in the Cathays area of Cardiff, at about 18:15 GMT on 22 December.
The force has appealed for witnesses.
