Crashes on both carriageways have led to a full closure of the A421 at Elstow

The A421 in Bedfordshire has been shut in each direction after two separate crashes on both carriageways.

Bedfordshire Police said there was a westbound two-vehicle collision at 06:20 GMT on Tuesday, followed by an eastbound carriageway crash involving three vehicles at 06:35.

Water on the road had also contributed to the closure, the force added.

National Highways said the westbound carriageway reopened at about 09:45 and the eastbound was cleared at about 11:15. The westbound entry slip road, which was closed for much of the morning, has also reopened.

A police spokesperson said one man had been taken to hospital with minor injuries and no arrests had been made.

Drivers were encouraged to drive according to the weather conditions and find alternative routes as roads in the area became heavily congested.

Just a short distance away, the A421 was affected by heavy flooding by Marston Moretaine in October 2024 when a month's worth of rain fell in less than 48 hours.

A pumping station was moved to higher ground to mitigate further issues.
