A husband and wife from County Antrim convicted of serious crimes against a four week old baby boy have had their appeals dismissed.

The little boy sustained severe injuries in an assault that left him blind and brain damaged.

This was as a result of Christopher Fulton, 36, assaulting him in a fashion Newry Crown Court previously heard was "similar to a car crash" in terms of severity.

Christopher and Amanda Fulton were sentenced at Newry Crown Court last year

He was convicted of grievous bodily harm with intent and two counts of cruelty to a child.

His wife Amanda, 37, was found guilty of causing/allowing a child to suffer physical harm and cruelty to a child.

The pair are from Rockfield Gardens in Mosside near Ballymoney, County Antrim.

The judge told the court of appeal that "Christopher Fulton was the perpetrator of this violence" and that "the sentence reflects the gravity of his crime".

The court also heard that the injuries of the baby known as P were so severe, he was as close to death as he could be.

The judge told the court that P's foster parent "showed all that is good in the midst of all that is bad".
