A man who died after his car entered the Leeds-Liverpool Canal has been named as 74-year-old John Harkin.

Emergency crews were called after Mr Harkin's silver Range Rover Evoque entered the water near Hirst Mill Crescent in Saltaire at about 18:45 GMT on Sunday.

A police officer went into the canal and managed to pull Mr Harkin to the towpath, where CPR was then carried out, however he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Harkin's family said he would be "much missed" by those who knew him, and described him as a "keen sportsman from an early age".

"We as a family would like to express our sincere thanks to PC Everett who attempted an extremely brave rescue," they added.

In their statement, Mr Harkin's family said his passions had included rugby, golf, walking and ornithology.

A force spokesperson appealed to anyone who saw Mr Harkin or his vehicle on Sunday to get in touch.

West Yorkshire Police previously revealed that PC Everett's police vehicle was hit by a brick in a "mindless attack" just 30 minutes before he entered the water to try and rescue Mr Harkin.
