Police say the man conned his way into the woman's home in Salford

A man pretending to be a window cleaner tricked a 95-year-old woman into letting him in her home and then tied her up and demanded money.

She was tied up and threatened in an attempted robbery in her home in Little Hulton in Salford on Tuesday morning, Greater Manchester Police said.

The crime was disrupted when one of the woman's friends came round and confronted the man who ran off.

Their "brave actions" have been commended by the force. Officers appealed for any information about the "vile incident", including CCTV and doorbell footage.

The man is described as white, in his late 60s or early 70s, with short brown hair combed back. He was wearing glasses and a dark raincoat jacket with jeans.

Det Insp Paul Davies said: "As we progress this investigation, we are appealing for anyone with any information to please come forward. It could be something big or small– it all assists in our work.

"This was a vile incident in which a woman was tied up and threatened, and we are determined to locate the man responsible."

He added: "Thankfully, this was not a more serious situation and we commend the brave actions of the lady's friend who confronted the man and called officers."

GMP said no arrests had yet been made and the woman, who was not injured, was being supported by officers.
