EV charging points to be installed across Plymouth
PA MediaMore than 750 on-street electric vehicle (EV) charging points are to be installed in Plymouth.
Plymouth City Council said it would spend £2.4m, granted by the government in 2024, to help provide dual EV charging points in areas with limited access to off-street parking.
It said it would work with two charge point operators, who would both provide substantial private investment, to continue the rollout of accessible electric vehicle charging, as part of its Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) project.
Councillor John Stephens said it marked a "major milestone" for the city and the investment would help "remove a key barrier to electric vehicle ownership".
The council said it had partnered with companies Connected Kerb and Believ to operate the points with work set to begin in the spring.
Stephens added: "We are taking a significant step towards delivering a reliable, accessible charging network for residents who do not have off-street parking."
Aviation, maritime and decarbonisation minister Keir Mather said he was aware "charging availability is one of the biggest barriers to people buying an EV", but the new chargers should give drivers "confidence to go electric knowing they can charge up when they're on the go".
