A man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after a woman was attacked on a university campus following a night out.

The woman, who is in her 20s, was assaulted on fields on the University of Huddersfield campus, near the Barbara Hepworth building, between 03:00 and 04:30 GMT on Sunday.

West Yorkshire Police sad she had met the man earlier that same day at a McDonald's in the John William Street area and he had offered to help her get home.

The force said a 26-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the attack, adding that the investigation was continuing "at pace".

Det Insp Will Denton said: "I understand this incident has caused some concern in the local area, particularly among students, and I want to reassure people that a thorough investigation is continuing at pace."

He added: "The victim continues to receive support from specialist officers, and there is an increased neighbourhood policing presence in the area to provide reassurance to residents."

Anyone with information is being urged to contact police, particularly anyone who saw anything suspicious near the McDonald's on John William Street or on Cross Church Street from 02:00 onwards on Sunday.
