An affordable housing development is to be built on a former car park next to a Bradford swimming pool.

Breck Homes has been granted permission to build 20 homes on land near Bowling Pool in Flockton Road, which was owned by Bradford Council until it was sold to the housing developer last year.

The permission was granted on the condition that all of the homes be classed as affordable.

The company said: "It is anticipated the majority of the new homes will be occupied by people and young families in active employment helping to ensure the economically active population can be retained and increase the support for existing local facilities."

Breck Homes has also submitted plans to build 32 homes on a vacant site the other side of the pool, next to Bolling Hall Museum, but a decision on that application has yet to be made.

Bowling Pool car park is one of dozens of sites Bradford Council has sold off in recent years to try and balance its books.

The site had been earmarked for housing in the past, with planning permission granted in 2015, but it remains undeveloped.

The "energy efficient" homes will be a mix of housing, with four one-bed ground floor maisonettes, four two-bed first floor maisonettes, four two-bed houses, six three-bed houses and two four-bed houses.

Most of the homes will have private gardens and there will also be a communal garden, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

When the proposals were first announced, a statement from Breck Homes said: "The schemes will feature a combination of shared ownership and homes for affordable rent.

"Breck is currently in discussion with a number of housing association partners to acquire and manage the units on completion.

"The developments are expected to commence build mid-2026 subject to planning approval."

The housing developer hopes national body Homes England will provide grants for the scheme due to its provision of 100% affordable housing.
