Magdalen Street was due to remain closed until Sunday 15 March

A major route in Norwich city centre is set to open almost a week earlier than expected.

Magdalen Street and the adjoining Edward Street were closed to traffic on 1 February to allow demolition work to continue on Anglia Square and other nearby buildings.

The city council said work had progressed faster than expected and Magdalen Street would open this Sunday, instead of next Sunday, as originally planned.

However, it said a short section of Edward Street will remain closed due to ongoing demolition works, with associated temporary diversions put in place.

Labour councillor Carli Harper, the cabinet member for major projects, said she wanted to "thank residents and traders for their patience during the closure of Magdalen Street".

She added that contractors "really have put a shift in to get this stage of demolition completed earlier than scheduled."

The initial phase of demolition work began at Anglia Square in November.

The 1960s-built shopping centre is being bulldozed to make way for 1,100 homes and also retail and leisure spaces.
