Walkers lost in thick fog up a Peak District hill were rescued after alerting Derbyshire Police.

Edale Mountain Rescue Team said the four "did the right thing" after finding themselves separated on dangerous terrain near the summit of Mam Tor, near Castleton, at about 19:15 GMT on Sunday.

Volunteer rescuers managed to locate the two groups using voice contact and sightings of their faint torch lights in thick fog, heavy rain and strong winds.

Two separate crag rescue systems were set up to bring the walkers off the face to the summit.

All were unharmed, said the rescue team, and were then walked back to the roadside to warm up before being taken on to the Edale team's base for warm drinks and chocolate biscuits.

A spokesperson has reminded Peak District visitors there is no footpath up the Y gully to Mam Tor and said: "The walkers did exactly the right thing when they realised that their supposed shortcut to the summit had led them onto some steep and treacherous ground, they phoned the police and asked for mountain rescue.

"The heavy rain and some treacherous conditions underfoot added to the thick fog and wind helped to make this one of our more memorable rescues of late."
