Ricky Murphy was remanded in custody ahead of a plea hearing next month

A man has appeared in court accused of hitting a pedestrian with a van and leaving him in a critical condition.

Ricky Lee Wayne Murphy, 29, appeared at Carlisle Magistrates' Court to answer a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He is also accused of driving a blue Fiat Scudo van dangerously and causing serious injury to the man.

"[The victim] is still in hospital," George Shelley, prosecuting, told district judge Philip Holden.

Murphy, of Ferguson Place, Carlisle, entered no pleas during the short hearing and is due to appear next at Carlisle Crown Court on 4 February.

The crash happened on the residential Prescott Road in Longsowerby, Carlisle, on Sunday afternoon.
