Central Bedfordshire Council said the site in Leighton Buzzard would need to close for up to eight weeks

A household waste recycling centre is to close for up to eight weeks from 12 January to allow for essential maintenance to be carried out.

The work is aimed at reducing the risk of flooding at the Leighton Buzzard Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Central Bedfordshire Council said it would include repairing a drainage channel to ensure the site remained accessible.

Executive member for sustainability and climate resilience Tracey Wye said: "I am sure most of us will understand the need to fix the drainage before it becomes a bigger job."

The council said the works were being carried out after Christmas and before Spring to avoid the busier periods

The authority said residents could book extra slots via its online booking system at alternative sites, the nearest being at Thorn Turn, Dunstable and Ampthill.

Wye said "people should be able to continue to carry on recycling" as there are four other recycling centres in Central Bedfordshire.

"The council website also has other ideas for reusing, repairing and repurposing unwanted items which people might find to be even more convenient," she added

Residents will continue to receive their kerbside collections, which can be checked on the council's website.
