Stream cleared of debris after bus crash

Work is starting to clear debris from a stream after a double-decker bus crashed off a road into the water.

The Bluestar vehicle, carrying Barton Peveril College students, swerved through traffic before ploughing through railings in Bishopstoke Road in Eastleigh, Hampshire, on 26 June.

The bus driver - a 69-year-old man - and four teenagers were seriously injured. Fifteen other passengers suffered minor injuries.

Hampshire County Council said temporary traffic lights would be in place from Monday while the watercourse was cleared.

It added: "The work is expected to take place over three to four evenings, between 18:00 and 22:00.

"Plans are currently being developed for the permanent repair of the barriers, which we aim to complete in the near future."

The bus driver was hailed a hero by a witness, who said he apparently ditched the bus to avoided a head-on collision.

Another witness told the BBC the driver reported that his brakes and accelerator failed at the same time.

Police are continuing to investigate the crash with the help of witnesses and dashcam footage.
