A 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection with disorder in a town, in which bricks were thrown at police officers.

Durham Police were called to Horden shortly after 21:15 BST on Friday after large crowds gathered on a street, a force spokesperson said.

Pockets of "serious violence" broke out and a van containing police dogs was rammed by an e-bike, they added.

Ch Supt Andrea Arthur said the behaviour of some people at the scene was "appalling" and the force was working to identify other suspects involved.

"They engaged in vile and destructive behaviour, attacking the police officers who were deployed to protect members of the public, and caused other residents to feel terrified in their own homes," she said.

"We will not tolerate violent disorder of this nature in our communities."

She said officers were now reviewing bodycam footage of the scene to identify further offenders.
