Lancashire County Council says it has up to 150 drivers on standby to grit the county's roads during the winter months

Snowfall and icy conditions have led to the closure of some schools, tips and libraries in Lancashire, with residents being warned to "only travel if you absolutely have to".

A Met Office yellow weather warning for snow and ice is currently in place and more wintry showers are expected in the county throughout the rest of the week.

Several schools closed earlier along with household waste recycling centres in Barnoldswick and Great Harwood and Clitheroe libraries, Lancashire County Council said.

"Please only travel if you absolutely have to, and take care if you are out on the roads over the next few days," Councillor Warren Goldsworthy said.

The council said gritting crews were continuing to work to keep "priority routes", including roads to hospitals and those important for public transport, open.

"Our teams have been working flat out to keep Lancashire's roads safe and open, however travel may still be difficult as snow and ice covers large parts of Lancashire," Goldsworthy added.

The authority has urged residents to check in on family and friends who may be more vulnerable in the cold weather.

Sunday night was the coldest night of the season so far for England and Wales, with temperatures in Shap in Cumbria dipping to -10.9C.

Train services and flights have been cancelled, while the runway at Liverpool John Lennon Airport is closed.
