Snow and ice have closed the runway at Liverpool John Lennon Airport

Planes were grounded at Liverpool John Lennon Airport after its runway had to be closed for several hours due to snow and ice.

Easyjet departures to Amsterdam, Belfast and Paris were among those cancelled, along with Wizz Air flights to Gdansk and Ryanair services to Barcelona.

The airport later confirmed the runway had reopened at 15:00 GMT.

More than 30 arrivals or departures had been cancelled and passengers earlier told the BBC of their frustration.

Victoria Hibbert, from Chester, was meant to be flying to Gdansk in Poland with her son and daughter-in-law.

She said: "The runway is closed and so we can't fly.

"We were going for six days. We now won't be able to go until Wednesday.

"There was minimal information, I have to say that, and we were funnelled all the way through Border Control, back again, and out, and back through Arrivals.

"It would have been quite handy to have known after about six hours of waiting."

Another passenger, who was due to fly to Geneva, said: "I know the weather is an inconvenience but it has been well, well advertised that it was going to be a snowy day."
