A man who died following a disturbance at a pub in Whitby has been named.

Jason Smith, 49, who is originally from Hull but was living in Halifax, died after he sustained injuries at The Elsinore pub on Flowergate just after 23:00 GMT on Sunday 15 March.

Four men were arrested following his death and have since been released on conditional bail, North Yorkshire Police said.

Paying tribute, his family said: "He will continue to live on in our hearts and memories as the kind, loving, generous, hardworking and larger-than-life character that he was."

The statement said: "On the evening of Sunday 15 March, a dearly loved son, brother, fiancé, uncle, cousin and friend was taken away from us all in devastating circumstances.

"The loss of Jason has left such a huge void in all our lives that cannot ever be replaced.

North Yorkshire Police's Major Investigation Team (MIT) is continuing to investigate the incident and appealed for anyone who was in the pub at the time to come forward.
