Plans to improve parking around Whitby Abbey have been submitted to North Yorkshire's mayor.

North Yorkshire Council hopes to secure £250,000 from the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority (YNYCA) to expand the overflow car park at Whitby Abbey Headland.

The plan would see the installation of cellular paving - porous slabs which interlock - so the car park could be used during rainy periods which have left the current surface unusable due to boggy conditions.

North Yorkshire Council also said its long-term ambition was to create a second permanent park and ride for Whitby.

The authority's parking policy notes that "parking will be managed so as to support the vitality and attractiveness of town centres, recognising parking arrangements are key to trade".

Regeneration and localities officers have reviewed evidence and carried out community consultation in Whitby, a council report said.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the project would be backed by the YNYCA's High Street Fund.
