Road closure and speed change proposed by council
GoogleA consultation is being held about the permanent closure of a stretch of Crewe Lane in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, close to a new housing development.
Warwickshire County Council is also proposing the introduction of a 30mph speed limit along the road between its junctions with Glasshouse Lane and Lanceilotte Avenue.
Use by pedestrians and cyclists would be maintained, as would be access to the nearby golf club, said the council.
Warwickshire County Council's director of highways, Richard Fenwick, said the measures were necessary due to substantial growth around the south and east side of the town including new homes and schools.
Warwickshire County Council"The intention has always been to build a much more suitable spine road through the development, that would mean through traffic could use that much more safely," he said.
"We are aware there will be some negative feeling about the proposals," he said.
It would increase journey times for some, he explained, "but then there are lots of benefits".
"There's been a lot of feeling that Crewe Lane has got too much traffic on it already," he added.
The spine road is expected to be completed in 2026 with changes to Crewe Lane's layout coming in after that, according to the proposals.
Local residents have until 8 January to respond to the consultation.
