A burst water pipe under an "incredibly icy" street in Coalville has led to the road being closed.

Leicestershire Police said Vaughan Street had been shut and asked people to avoid the area on Monday afternoon.

Severn Trent said a closure was in place "for the safety of the public" while its workers were fixing the leak.

The water firm could not yet say what had caused the leak, which was reported on Sunday, or how long a repair was estimated to take.

A spokesperson added: "We understand that emergency repairs like this can be an inconvenience and we thank everyone for their patience while we work as quickly as possible to get the pipe fixed and the road returned to normal."

North West Leicestershire MP Amanda Hack highlighted the conditions caused by the burst, saying: "Please take care when travelling through the area as the road surface is incredibly icy."
