A 59-year-old woman who died after being hit by a car has been named.

Diane Jones, from Sunderland, was struck by a black Volvo XC90 as she was crossing Durham Road in Farringdon, Sunderland, at about 23:00 GMT on Saturday, Northumbria Police said.

She was pronounced dead at the scene near the junction with Arbroath Road.

A man has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving while uninsured and disqualified as well as aggravated vehicle taking. He was due to appear at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court.
