A dog which has spent six years in the care of an animal charity is hoping someone will finally lend her a helping paw in her search for a forever home.

Seven‑year‑old shar pei Edie has been cared for by the Dogs Trust in Leeds since 2020, following the death of her owner.

The charity said over the years there had been dozens of potential adopters, but none had quite been the right match.

Behaviour officer Tasha Swift said: "Edie is just a gorgeous girl. She's really fun, has a great personality and is really loving and gentle."

The Dogs Trust said Edie needed a "patient adopter who would allow her to settle at her own pace"

Swift said that Edie had some specific needs that any future owner would need to consider.

Because she could be nervous around other animals, Edie would need a calm, adult-only home where she would be the only pet.

Even so, staff said she had made "huge progress" over the past year.

Trainers have been helping her slowly build confidence and to get comfortable with new experiences.

"She just needs a bit of time and patience from her new family," Swift said.

"But she's come on massive amounts with people and being able to see dogs at a bit of a distance when out and about."

Swift added: "She really deserves her forever home."
