Police dogs to sniff out cyber criminals' devices
Humberside PoliceTwo police dogs are being trained to assist investigations into criminals who exploit technology to commit offences, Humberside Police have said.
Digital detection dogs Duke and Dexter are on a six-week training programme to uncover hidden items such as USB drives and mobile phones.
Officers said these items are often critical pieces of evidence in criminal investigations.
The dogs will work alongside the force's online investigation team (POLIT), who carry out investigations into the sharing of child sexual exploitation material online, once their training is complete.
Humberside PoliceThe police said the two German Shorthaired Pointers are new to the force and a first for the region.
POLIT Det Insp Andy Postill said the dogs will strengthen their ability to fight online child exploitation.
He explained that the dogs will provide support in locating evidence.
"Particularly when suspects attempt to conceal items such as SIM cards and USB drives."
Dog handler PC Steve Matthews said: "These two new recruits will bring a unique skill set to the team, and it is amazing to see the difference they can make.
"I'm proud to be a part of this innovative approach to modern policing."
