Norwich City players donate day's pay to charity
PA MediaNorwich City's players have given up a day's wages to donate about £80,000 to a community sports foundation.
The Championship side's donation has been made to the Norwich City Community Sports Foundation (CSF) charity. The club has not revealed the value of the donation but the BBC understands it is about £80,000.
As the club's official charity, it uses sport to support young people and runs a number of activities and programmes across Norfolk.
Kenny McLean, club captain, said: "Hopefully, this gesture and donation shows our appreciation for everything that they do, and allows them to continue their amazing work within our community."
In the build-up to Saturday's match at home to Birmingham City, a number of initiatives and activities have taken place to highlight the work of the CSF and raise additional funds.
Alongside players, head coach Philippe Clement and sporting director Ben Knapper also donated a day's salary.
Ian Thornton, chief executive officer of the CSF, said: "This donation means a great deal to us. When a team comes together like this it sends a powerful message — that they believe in the work we're doing and want to stand with the people we support.
"Their generosity will help us reach more individuals across Norfolk, offering life-changing opportunities to those who need them most."
He said Saturday's match would be a chance to celebrate the foundation and values of the football club.
"All the fundraising everyone does for us, whether it's a challenge event or Run Norwich, goes to people needing support," he added.
"It allows us to fund activities. A lot of activities are not funded or not affordable because there's so much need and people enjoy our activities this allows us to sustain a lot of our programmes and ultimately as a football club take a responsibility in helping the community."
