Porlock's historic church spire will need to be refurbished

An urgent appeal has been launched to raise £50,000 to save a historic church spire.

St Dubricius Church's 13th century oak‑framed spire in Porlock is one of only a few of its kind left in England and the rare spire could become unsafe without repairs.

The top of the spire was removed when it was damaged in a storm in 1703 and the shingles were last replaced 90 years ago, according to a spokesperson for the church.

Marian Fosker, one of the church trustees, said: "It's important to people here, it's unique and it identifies Porlock. People are very effectionate for it and the fact it's been there for so long."

The church said they have applied for support from the Heritage Lottery Fund to cover the remaining cost of the repairs.

Peter Fosker, another church trustee, said they have planned fundraising events coming up - both for the church members and the village.

The crowdfunding appeal will start on 7 February.
