Jersey sets date for new vape liquid excise duty
Nicholas T Ansell/PAA new excise duty on vape liquid is due to come into force on 11 May, the Government of Jersey has announced.
It means vape smokers will pay 20p per millilitre of vape, or e-liquid.
The government said the tax was designed "to minimise the harmful effects of nicotine consumption and smoking" whilst ensuring that vapes are affordable for smokers who are quitting tobacco for good.
The duty was agreed as part of the budget for the next three years and will apply to all vape liquid whether it contains nicotine or not.
Vape liquid (e-liquid) will be added to traveller's duty-free allowances and people aged over 17 will be able to import up to 50ml of vape liquid duty free.
Businesses and individuals have to declare vape liquid they import by freight or post to the Jersey Customs and Immigration Service.
The liquid will be seized off them if they fail to declare the goods and they risk prosecution for repeated or deliberate breaches, the government warned.
The UK is introducing a vaping products duty in October.
