The M6 motorway has been closed in Cheshire for several hours after a car which left the road crashed into water.

The driver was rescued by a firefighter after their car came to "rest on the edge of a brook with the rear of the vehicle partially in the water", Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

National Highways said the southbound carriageway would be closed for "several hours" between junction 19 for Knutsford and junction 18 for Middlewich after the 02:30 BST crash.

The rescued driver was taken to hospital, the fire brigade added.
