Teenage girl dies after hit-and-run collision
Getty ImagesA man in his 20s has been arrested after a 16-year-old girl died following a hit-and-run incident in Navan, County Meath.
It happened at about 20:20 local time on the Slane Road on Saturday.
Emergency services responded to an incident involving a car and a female pedestrian where the car "failed to remain at the scene", gardaí (Irish police) have said.
The girl was treated at the scene before being transferred to hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
The male, arrested in connection to the investigation, is currently detained in a Garda station in the eastern region and a car has been seized for technical and forensic examination.
The scene of the collision remains preserved for examination and local traffic diversions are in place.
Elsewhere, a man and a woman, both aged in their 40s, died following a collision between a car and a van at Robin Hill in Tramore, County Waterford, at about 12:00 on Saturday.
Later on Saturday, a woman in her 80s died in a single-vehicle crash in Eyrecourt, County Galway at about 20:15.
Gardaí have appealed for anyone with information or dashcam footage from any of these incidents to contact them.
