An investigation has been launched after newts were reportedly stolen from a community farm and killed by three teenagers, police say.

The break-in at Bath City Farm was discovered in the early hours of Thursday, with large amounts of broken glass scattered in the play area, staff said.

On Sunday, an Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said they believed the incident happened at about 18:00 GMT on Wednesday. Anyone with information about the break-in was asked to contact the force.

Brendan Tate Wistreich, director of the farm, described the damage caused as "reckless" and added it was not the first time it had happened.

"Sadly, these are not isolated incidences. The warmer weather and lighter evenings often coincide with increased anti-social behaviour," he said.

"Last year, the same pond was targeted in a series of incidents that led to the total decimation of the newt population and the complete destruction of the pond," Wistreich added.
