Reports of palm oil at Southerness beach are being investigated

A drone could be deployed to search beaches in Dumfries and Galloway for palm oil, following reports that the substance was found washed up at Southerness.

Since publicising the find on social media, Dumfries and Galloway Council said it had received reports of similar discoveries at other locations in the region.

A spokesperson for the local authority said it would investigate the reports this week and may use a drone to help.

They warned people to keep dogs away from the substance as there have been reports they can become seriously ill if they eat it.

The council told BBC Scotland News it had received the unconfirmed report of palm oil at Southerness last week.

"Palm oil being washed up on beaches is not uncommon, but it is something the public should look out for," the spokesperson added.

They said an environmental health officer had been deployed to the beach. If they find the substance, it may be tested to establish whether it is palm oil.

"Through our social media post we have subsequently received additional unconfirmed reports about other locations in the region," the spokesperson added.

"We will investigate further this week and deploy a drone to search the beaches mentioned, should this become necessary.

"It should be noted however that deposits may be extremely small and could come and go with the tides."

In its original state palm oil is a natural edible vegetable oil commonly used in food processing.

However, while on ships and in the sea, it can become contaminated with bacteria and other waste products.

The council spokesperson said that if anyone believed their dog had been in contact with the substance and had concerns about their pet's health, they should contact a vet as soon as possible.

"Please be aware and keep children away from any substance that you suspect may be palm oil on the beach and keep dogs on a lead," they added.
