Plans have been officially submitted to create a new £59m leisure centre and office complex in Swadlincote.

South Derbyshire District Council put forward the proposals for the new facilities in Cadley Park following a consultation it described as "overwhelmingly positive".

However, concerns had been raised over the development's potential effect on the local environment and wildlife.

If the plans are approved, the centre would replace the Green Bank Leisure Centre in Swadlincote, which would be demolished and form part of a town centre redevelopment. It is hoped the new centre would be completed by 2028.

An ecological appraisal raised concerns over the loss of habitats and hunting spaces for newts, bats and foxes.

The documents also highlighted that the site is likely visited by various deer species.

The council announced in January 2025 the buildings in Civic Way, where Green Bank is based, were becoming unfit for purpose.

The town centre redevelopment would include improved pedestrian passageways and public art.
